Week 5- 13/5/24
This week in maths we have finished off our fractions unit, learning about halves and quarters. In English we have written out our hybrid animal letters and focused on using correct spelling and personal pronouns (using I).
We have been creative in our music and art lessons, learning songs and creating David Hockney style artwork. DT was very exiting as we got to try cutting up and tasting lots of different kinds of fruit! It has also been lovely to have PE outside again.
Week 4 - 10/05/24
This week in English the children received a letter from Mrs Fielding stating they could choose what the money given to us could be spent on. They responded by writing her a letter back with some interesting requests. School pets, various trips away and lots of toys for the playground. We then began our new unit on letter writing though a letter written to Baby Bear from Goldilocks apologising for her break in and the mess that she made.
In Maths the children went on an array hunt and discovered that by ordering objects in a certain way it can help them count more efficiently. We spent the rest of the week creating equal groups and putting them into arrays.
In computing this week the children created their own photo stories using toy and the iPads. They captured 3 photos to tell their story. They found out what parts of a plant we eat, from the flower right down to the roots and it Art they drew the outline of a body placed in different positions.
Week 3 - 03/04/24
This week in English the children ended their unit on the Elephog by creating their own non-chronological report on a fictional hybrid animal. In Maths the children have been making equal groups and recapping their doubles.
In computing this week the children created their own picture stories ready to capture them with the iPads next week. We established that fruit contains seeds which makes cucumbers, tomatoes, aubergines and courgettes fruits, the shock and horror!
Week 2 - 26/04/24
In English this week the children had a go at using exclamation marks to help make the meaning of their sentences clear and recapped when we might use a questions mark. Together we innovated our model text about the Elephog about our new hybrid animal the Chion. A cross between a chicken and a lion.
In Maths we started a new unit on skip counting. The children completed activities counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
In Science this week the children learnt the different parts of a plant and created their own 'children playing' poses for art.
Week 1 - 19/04/24
Welcome to your final term in Year 1 Poppy class!
This week in English we have been learning about Elephogs - these are rare mammals that live in garden across England. They have the head of an elephant and the body of a hedgehog. The children really enjoyed coming up with their own hybrid animals explaining what they eat and where they live.
In Maths we finished off our unit on Mass and Capacity. Comparing different weights and solving word problems.
In RE we started learning about Humanism and comparing it to other religions around the world, the children found similarities in being kind, giving to others and working hard and in PSHE we discussed things we should put into our bodies (healthy foods and the odd chocolate), things we should not (soaps and other cleaning products) and things we can with adult supervision (Calpol, inhalers and some creams). Otherwise we are full steam ahead in play rehearsals.
