Week 3 - 15/02/24
In English this week Year 1 have written their own version of 'A Tiger Who Came To Tea' through describing their own animals, the food and drink consumed and who's house it was they invited themselves to. In Maths the children further developed their understand of place value, portioning numbers up to 50 and building them using tens and ones (see example below).
In Science we explored the effect that logging has on our planet, animals and humans. We all came to conclusion that logging was bad and that the Fens could do with more trees to help soak up all the water! In History the children recapped last years learning about the Magna Carta and its importance. See if your child remembers the promises that King John had to make to the people of England.
Week 2 - 08/02/24
This week year 1 have been coming up with a class innovation for 'A Bear who came to tea'. We have been describing what the bear looks like, what it likes to eat and drink (our was partial to a glass of red wine) and who's house it came to. In Maths we have been counting in 10s and 1s (see below for example) and finding the difference between two numbers up to 50.
The RE we have been learning about 'the 5 Ks' and what they represent. The 5 Ks are five items that a Guru (teacher) commanded Khalsa Sikhs to wear at all times. Next week we will be learning more about Khalsa and what it means to belong. In Art the children explore paintings by Van Gogh and had a go at painting in his style, using short brush strokes to represent movement.
Week 1 - 01/02/24
Welcome back to Spring term 2.
This week in Maths we started our new unit on numbers to 50 - please support your children at home by practising the formation of these numbers. In English we read The Tiger Who Came To Tea and learnt a descriptive piece about the Tiger, see if your child can remember the description with the action thy came up with.
In Computing this week the children explored the BeeBots, getting to know the buttons in order to program it. In Art they had a go at pointillism, learning this new technique inspired by artist George Seurat and in DT we revisited wheels, axles and axle holders in preparation for making our own cars in the coming weeks and in Science we discussed ways to help protect our planet.
This half term is set to be a busy one! With only 3 weeks and 4 days to go Year 1 are preparing for a show all about the seasons and everybody has an important role to play. More on that next week!
