Summer 1

Kings and Queens
This half term our topic is Kings and Queens. We will be learning about the royal family, castles and palaces, coronations, King John and the Magna Carta and our government. We will role play being kings and queens at a coronation and building castles and thrones, being the king's guards and voting. At the end of our topic we will host a royal themed garden party.

To support our learning we suggest that you could try to engage with the following low, or no cost activities from 50 things to do before you're 5.

Week 5
In Reception we have continued our Kings and Queens topic by learning King John and the Magna Carta. We have also discovered that voting is used as a fair system for making decisions that the majority of people agree with and held our own ballot to decide on what new play equipment we would like to see in Reception.
We have also started a writing topic based on instructions to make a jam sandwich ready for our royal themed garden party lunch next week!

Week 4
It may have been a shorter week because of the bank holiday but it was still a busy one!
The children have particularly enjoyed the role play this week and loved pretending to be the tyrant King John. They discovered that he was so mean that he was made to sign the Magna Carta to promise to be a kinder, fairer king. The children were surprised to find out that not even Kings and Queens can do exactly what they want!
In preparation for our royal tea party, the children helped us to make a jam sandwich by organising some very jumbled instructions for the King.
Week 3
Science Week was enjoyed by everyone in Reception this week. Our experiments included exploring how to make ice melt quickly to discover the treasures frozen inside, observing what happens when vinegar and bicarbonate of soda are mixed together and discovering the differences between solids and liquids through oozy 'oobleck'.
Our topic learning was about coronations and finding out about Westminster Abbey, the orb and sceptre and cosmati patterns.
The children completed their Talk for Writing unit of work on The Queen's Hat by innovating and writing where the hat could fly to in Ely.
Week 2
This week was all about castles, palaces and royal homes. The children learnt about the union flag, the Royal Standard and the king's guards. They even made their own 'bearskin hats' to turn themselves into a guard to protect the castle that had had created with the climbing frame outside.
Maths has been all about identifying and copying patterns and the children have been busy creating patterns of jewels on crowns and adding patterned embellishments to sandcastles.
Week 1
This week we have learnt about the Union Jack and Royal Standard flags, Buckingham Palace, the royal family and the royal cypher. The children were excited to receive a letter from 'Queenie' about her lost hat and were keen to search around the school to see if they could find it! In maths we have started exploring 3D shapes and enjoyed exploring their properties through printing and building. After a long wait our caterpillars finally completed their metamorphosis and we watched them being released into the wild!
