Summer 1

Week 1 - 13/04/2026

This week, we have had a fantastic start to the summer term, with lots of exciting learning across the curriculum.

In Maths, we have been focusing on multiplication, particularly counting in twos, fives, and tens. The children have enjoyed using a range of practical resources to help build their understanding, as well as taking part in investigations to explore patterns and deepen their learning.

In Writing, we have begun a new model text based on The Three Little Pigs. The children have been exploring how to make their writing more engaging by using exciting synonyms for adjectives. We have also been thinking about different villains from familiar stories and how to describe them. Some of the vocabulary we generated includes alternatives for “bad” such as evil, naughty, cheeky, terrible, and horrid, and for “scary” such as terrifying, eerie, spooky, and frightening.

In Art, we have started a new topic looking at how children are represented in art. This week, we focused on the artist Keith Haring and explored how he used poses in his work. The children created their own poses and took photographs, which we will use next week to inspire our own artwork.

In Science, we have begun learning about plants. We have set up an experiment to investigate how well cress grows in different conditions, including light, dark, with water, and without water. The children have made their own predictions and are excited to observe what happens over the next few weeks.

It has been a wonderful first week, and we are looking forward to building on this learning in the weeks ahead.

Week 2 - 20/04/2026

Year One have had another busy week of learning! In maths, we investigated arrays as part of our multiplication topic, finding equal groups in rows and columns. In geography, we learnt the names of the five oceans and discovered that they are large areas of water.

In science, we identified the different parts of a plant, including the roots, stem, leaves and flower. We also continued observing how well our cress is growing in different conditions.

In PSHE, we learnt that medicine can help us to feel better, but that we must always use it safely. We discussed that we should only take medicine from a trusted adult, such as a parent, doctor or nurse. We also learnt that medicines should be kept in a locked cupboard so that children cannot take them by themselves or take too much.

In RE, we learnt about how Muslims welcome a new baby in a special celebration called Aqiqah. We found out that the baby is often given a name, prayers are said, and family and friends come together to celebrate and give thanks. Sometimes the baby’s hair is cut as part of the celebration.

Week 3 - 27/04/2026

Week 4 - 04/05/2026
Week 5 - 11/05/2026

Year One have had another fantastic week of learning! Thank you to all of the parents who joined us for our art lesson on Monday. The children loved seeing you and sharing all the wonderful things they do in school.

In science, we continued our plants topic and learnt about evergreen and deciduous trees. We discovered that evergreen trees keep their leaves all year round, while deciduous trees lose their leaves in autumn.

In maths, we have been learning about fractions, focusing on halves. The children enjoyed playing games and completing activities to find half of shapes, objects and quantities.

In writing, we have been learning how to use the suffixes -er for comparative words and -est for superlative words, for example: tall, taller, tallest.

In PE, we have been practising yoga and trying a range of different yoga poses — some were definitely trickier than others!

In geography, we explored atlases to discover more about Europe. We also learnt about the difference between human features, which are man-made, and physical features, which are natural.
