Summer 2

Stories from the Past
This half term our topic is Stories from the Past. We will be learning that people are story tellers and that fairytale stories have been told for a very long time. We will learn that some stories teach us something, whilst other stories explain things. We will find out about stories from other countries and lessons that can be learnt through stories.

Our half termly overview provides you with with a flavour of other learning within our curriculum this half term.

To support our learning we also suggest that you  try to engage with the following low, or no cost activities from 50 things to do before you're 5.
Visit 50 Things to Do | Cambridgeshire & Peterborough and look for these activities!

Week 5

This week the children have discovered stories from West Africa about Anansi the Spider. The children learnt that he was a wise but mischevious character and thought of other adjectives to describe him too. Maths learning was all about patterns and the children made some amazing and thoughtful patterns using loose parts in the provision. They also developed their reasoning skills through trying to work out what would come next in patterns.

Week 4

The hot weather dominated our learning this week with the scorching temperatures meaning we stayed inside for much of the time and the children busied themselves  by developing their writing, drawing, fine motor, number and creative skills. When we did go outside, the shade of forest school or the water in the tuff spots kept us cool and the children explored melting, bubbles and animals that live in water. The children loved their daily ice pops and enjoyed spending time in the school library.

Week 3

Exploring shpes has been the focus of our maths this week. The children have enjoyed investigating rotating and flipping shapes to create pictures and patterns. They have even been discovering how to make deconstruct a shape to then create a whole new one! The children have finished their writing about Jack and the Beanstalk and produced some work that they were really proud of. Greek myths have helped the children to understand that some stories help them to learn things and they particularly enjoyed the story of Prometheus which led to them creating their own firey torches. With Sports Day just around the corner, the torches made us this about Olympic style races too!

Week 2
The children have been making the most of the wet weather by exploring capacity and mass when playing outside with different containers, wheelbarrows, pots and pans. Puddle play was really popular! Please can any spare school clothes that have been borrowed be returned in case of more wet weather next week. A spare change in the children's bags would be really useful too!

The legend of George and the Dragon has inspired the children to create some amazing art work and they have enjoyed exploring different versions of the same story.  Jack and the Beanstalk continues to engage the children and we have seen the best story maps yet! Maths has been all about recognising and understanding equal sets in order to share and group. We have seen some great problem solving and heard good vocabulary.

Week 1

It was lovely to have the children back in school after the half term holiday and they were amazed to find that a gigantic beanstalk had grown in the classroom. Along side it was a pair of huge boots, a golden egg and a poster asking if anyone had seen a missing harp. We could hear loud footsteps and harp music but it was a mystery as to where they were coming from!  Curiosity got the better of them and the children had to find out more, so set about asking lots of questions, exploring the environment for more clues and even wrote to Mrs Fielding to see if she had any more information! The children quickly realised that Jack and the Beanstalk was going to be the key focus for some of our learning and have discovered that is is a traditional tale. They have been creating story maps and learning to tell the story.

In maths, the children have been exploring sharing and they are very good at recognising if amounts are not shared fairly.

They have been exploring different media to try and draw figures and have been using puppets to tell stories. the block area has been used very imaginatively with lots of interesting creations made even more more amazing with a range of enhancements.

Our play dough area has been very popular this week and the children have been creating their own frogs and singing songs.
